Business Planning and Visioning – the Key to Success

Monday, May 30th, 2011

One of the biggest problems that many would be entrepreneurs face is that they do not believe that they can start, and run, a successful business on their own. They believe that only those with high level degrees in business or related fields have the skill and talent to create a company, and that they’re stuck in the day to day drudgery of their jobs forever.

The truth is that whether you have a degree, or whether you never even finished high school, the key to business success is often in the business planning and visioning you do, rather than the certificates and diplomas you hold.

But what is business planning and visioning?

I like to think of business planning and visioning a little bit like a road map to success. The process involves a series of exercises that are designed to help you decide how to get your business from the idea stage, to the point where you break even, and start making a profit, and beyond.

There are many ways to go about business planning and visioning, and, contrary to popular belief, your business plan does not have to be written in any kind of formal language – unless you plan to use it to apply for financing.

The simplest way to get started on your business plan, is to sit down with a piece of paper and a pen, and start jotting down whatever ideas you have that relate to the business you’d like to run.

Once you’ve assembled a healthy amount of information on what your business will be about, it’s time to begin the process of creating a structured business plan, but again, this need not be a difficult or technical process. It is simply a means of organising your thoughts about your business into a logical and easy to follow document that will grow with your business, and help you to decide what your next step will be along the way.

Typically, a business plan is made up of several different sections. These include the executive summary, a general description of your business, your products or services, a marketing plan, an operations plan, a section on the management and organisation of your new business, your personal financial statement, start up and operational expenses, a financial plan and any appendices you may want to add to the document.

If all that sounds like a lot of technical mumbo jumbo that you are never going to be able to finish, do not worry. Business planning and visioning is not supposed to be a task that you dread, or that makes you want to run away! Take it one step at a time, and take your time to write down everything you believe will be relevant to the start up and running of your business.

Include the form of company you are planning to start, whether you will have partners in your business, and who your target market will be in the general description section. Figure out how you are going to market your business and to whom and write down where you may find such people(s), and your products and services, and write those methods down in your marketing plan. When it comes to operations, will you be running a cash only business, or accepting credit applications? Will you operate from premises, or from your home? When it comes to financial matters, decide what you will need to start your business, and what it will cost. Think about what it will cost to run your business, including salaries or wages, premises rental, stock and utilities.

Ideally, your business planning process should take several weeks or even months, and you will add to the plan as you go along, writing down everything you can think of that will take your business from start up to success. That document will also accompany you as you work on your business, changing and evolving with your business.

The main benefit of formal business planning and visioning to the business owner is that it forces you to think about all the different factors that will determine the success of your business venture. It also helps you to create a logical ‘road map’ for your company, and gives you something to refer to during the often frantic and tumultuous process of launching a company.

One trick that I’ve found works quite well when you’re in the throes of the business planning and visioning phase of a start up is to think about where you would like your business to be in two or even five years. Then work backwards, through each of the steps that you would have to take in order to get from where you are now, to where you would like to be.

Business planning and visioning is a combination of imagination and planning, which allows you to see past what you have now, to what you would like to have in your company. It focuses your mind, and gives you an opportunity to think about the steps that will be needed to make a success of your company, but it is not something that requires you to have a degree! All you need is a passion for your chosen business, a little business knowledge (that you can find in any small business book), and a logical method of planning.

The old saying goes: those who fail to plan, plan to fail, and that is particularly true of starting a business. So spend some time on your business planning and visioning now, and launch your business with a clear road map in mind, and a good idea of the direction you are heading in, and how you will get there.

Help! I Hate My Job

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

I remember one time sitting down with my Dad, who had worked for years at a car factory and told him “I hate my job.” He responded in his usual manner and told me “Well welcome to the real world…we all hate our jobs.” That was about 3 months before his 50th birthday, another 6 months after that he passed away. The 60 hour weeks in a factory no doubt contributed to his poor health.

My Dad had great musical skills as well as an uncanny ability for wood working. Would he still be around if he took a leap and went into business for himself doing something he loved? I am not sure, I can’t make that call, but I do know how the job he hated affected him and it wasn’t positive.

When I told my Dad I hated my job, I meant it. I really really meant it! Can anyone relate to waking up and just feeling utter dread about going to work? You are in a bad mood, you snap at your loved ones, you can’t bring yourself to get out of the bed and all you can think about when you are at work is when is my shift over?

You watch the clock all day. You even make that promise to yourself you won’t look at the clock for HOURS. You wait and wait for what seems like an eternity and you look at the clock and see that 17 minutes have passed. It is soul crushing!

Still we do it over and over again. I know I did. I thought I would stay at my past job forever. I worked at a homeless shelter – dealing with a wide variety of mental illnesses, addictions and dangers. I thought that was my lot in life. I can’t leave my job, how will I pay the bills? Then a friend of mine called me up to say he was starting is own business. I was blown away – this guy has a job I would kill for – a comfy corporate gig that brought him 6 figures a year.

It motivated me – I followed him into the wild west of entrepreneurship. A couple years later, MANY failures under our belt and many lessons learned, I am now making more money than my job, and the dread and hatred of work…is gone.

If I had to give people advice about leaving their job – I would wrap it up with three letters: P.P.M

1. Prepare – If you want to leave your job – prepare! Save more money than usual, try to build a nice nest egg that you can fall back on in a worst case scenario. Preparation also includes not burning your bridges. Don’t leave in a blaze of glory, give your notice in a timely fashion and try to stay on friendly terms with your co-workers. They might be your customers in the future.

2. Passion – Discover what your passion truly is. What do you love to do? What do you HAVE to do to stay happy? What kind of things make you bounce awake in the morning? This seems easy, but a lot of times people have trouble admitting what it is they really love to do. Take the time to figure out your real passions.

3. Monetize – The most important step! You need to figure out how to monetize your passion. I loved to design things on the computer – I now design websites as a lucrative side gig. I love doing it – it was a passion of mine and I get paid for it. That is the type of thing you need to figure out for yourself. I truly believe all passions can be monetized if you are creative enough.

Obviously that is not a full system to leave your job. There is a lot more to think about before hand and there is a lot more to do after you leave your job. This is merely my personal take on the basics of it.

My aforementioned friend does have a fully fleshed out system though. He has taken what he has learned and created a manual that anyone who is stuck in a dead end job should read. I WISH I had something like this when I left work – just the mistakes it would allow me to avoid would pay for it hundreds of times over.

Logging on For a Living

More and more people are becoming aware of the fact that to be on the internet can mean serious business opportunities for those who are switched on and prepared to do the necessary work. In times gone past getting set up in business was a lengthy process that would almost invariably require some hefty investment up front simply to get started. Now, all you need is a computer, an internet connection and an idea. The rest is simply a matter of following some uncomplicated steps and putting your plans into action. You can have an idea one day and be up and running within twenty four hours if you have the drive to make it happen.

Before the internet opened things up so much, a business would generally require premises from which to operate. Even if you ran the business from your home, this would make it more complicated as it would involve having your business life intrude heavily on your home life with little separation between the two. Now, all business can be routed through your computer – using e-mail, PayPal and some simple, user friendly websites (such as a blogging platform) – and the rest of your home can stay just as it is. The only concern that you need to have is how you are going to make it pay – but that is no different from any business, and there is no such thing as free money. What there is, thanks to the internet, is a world of business that is simpler and more transparent than it ever was before.

It feels good when you are earning without spending too much
money and exerting too much effort. However, you need to
determine the best promotion tool for your home-based Internet
marketing business so that you will be able to achieve success
despite of the risks involved.

Are you skeptical of home based businesses?

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Are you skeptical of home based businesses? I was too. However, after a lot of research I found a legitimate one in a coffee house letter. It is not MLM. Do not let Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt get in your way. The key to your success is to transform your resistance into an active support of a new way of life. I am sure you have heard of Mark Twain. He was a humorist, an author and social critic from the late 1800s who summed up his feeling about change: “You know, I’m all for progress. Its change I object to.”

Many of us believe that as well. We are afraid of change. Take control of your life. You literally do not have a thing to lose. Visit my web site and read the coffee house letter at http://www.equalbusinesssolution.com and take control of you life.

Work From Home Jobs For Moms Are Available More Than Ever

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

It may seem like a cruel riddle that in today’s times it’s becoming more and more important for moms to stay at home and raise their children; yet in tough financial times, living on only one income is not an option.

Choosing to be a stay at home mom obviously has incredible rewards that come with being the main role model for your children and a very active parent. But staying at home is also becoming a more practical option for moms as children become busier and need to be taken to different after school and social activities.

This is why it’s also important that moms not only make an income but can also have a very flexible work schedule while doing so. This is also something that won’t often be found when working outside of the home. This may sound like a tough situation but the good news is that there are more jobs for moms now more than ever!

One of the most popular jobs for moms is telecommuting. Many call centers today are starting to equip their staff to work from home by answering phone calls from customers to give advice, take care of billing matters, and for general customer service. Have a look around and you might be surprised that many of the call centers right in your neighborhood are offering work from home opportunities.

This is a great job for moms who stay at home but have children that are in school throughout the day. This is because sometimes these companies still have certain hours that they will need you to call or make phone calls. It’s also easier to talk on the phone to customers if you don’t have a baby crying in the background or small children that demand constant attention.

For moms who still need a more flexible schedule, selling products from the home such as Avon or Tupperware may be a better solution. Some of these companies require you to host parties in your home to showcase the product, many don’t, and many give you the choice. This is a great way to earn income the exact way you want to and lets you make as little or as much as you want.

So it can make for some nice pocket change or can be a tidy second income for the household. This is a great job for any mom, whether they have children in the home during the day or night. It’s also well suited to moms who prefer to work with people, rather than on the computer.

For moms who have an Internet connection, there are even more jobs and this is also a world that’s full of choice! If you have a strong technical knowledge of computers and the Internet, there are tons of jobs for moms in website design. Just about everyone is finding out just how easy it is to write their own blogs and Websites but very few people have the actual knowledge to actually design a site and manage it.

There are always thousands of jobs for web designers and this can make a great income. If you know your way around the Internet but don’t have the exact knowledge of HTML code and such, there are just as many jobs for moms who like to write. If you can put your thoughts into words and don’t mind doing some researching, freelance writing is a great job for moms that can also make a very nice income.

There really are more jobs for moms now more than ever. Whether you want to work with people over the phone, in person, or online, there are tons of jobs for moms available!

5 Key Customer Retention Tips

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Lets take a look at some ways to retain the customers you’ve worked so hard at earning.

Reward your clients for sticking with you. You can do anything from giving them a small (or large) discount on their next advertising campaign, you can discount a product or reward them by sending a thank you gift. This will let your client know you really do appreciate their business in other ways than just saying “thank you for the quick payment.”

Ask for your clients’ opinion. If you continue to do business for a client you may naturally think they like the work you do, the products you offer, the low prices or the people they keep contact with. However, there might be some things you need to improve on and you just don’t know. So, ask for some feedback from some of your most valuable clients. This will only help you better serve their needs.

Market to your existing clients. You probably worked incredibly hard to acquire the clients you have. You’ve done a project or two for them but haven’t been in contact since. Give them a phone call and see how they’re doing. See if they need any work completed. Your easiest clients to get business from should be your existing clients.

Keep to your promises. If you promise your client something, do everything in your power to keep your promise. There are instances when issues might arise and expectations might need to change but in any other case, keep your promise.

Have a dedicated account lead. Giving a particular client a dedicated individual to speak with during the time as a client can be a huge benefit. The client won’t be dealing with several individuals trying to play catch up if something arises. And the individual can keep in contact with the client making sure every need is taking care of and everything is running smooth. This special attention can have enormous impact on client/business relationship.

With all the scam’s and schemes out there in cyber space I can understand why you will be dubious and skeptical about all these making money from home business’s you see on the Internet.

Take me for example. I have spent a fortune on all types of money making schemes. I would buy almost anything I was offered. Affiliate programmes, web sites, The biggest flop i purchased was a Cash on Demand system here in the UK. This particular Home Study Course set me back 5 Grand and thats UK Pounds.!

Then I started visiting forums and again would purchase the members special offers, you know “how to make $5,000 US a week etc etc.

Maybe it is just me but i have now spoken to lot’s of people here on line and practically all of them have told me the same.

Are you frustrated and your mind clogged up trying to work out what to do next?.

I was exactly the same as you, i could not see the wood for the tree’s. All I wanted was a business i could do from home,How hard could it be?

Then just as I was about to give up for another day, something made me take one more look and it was as if I was being pulled towards a certain advert, was this The Law of Attraction at work?

I started to read the sales page and was instantly impressed by the honesty displayed by the owners, and I still didn’t know what the product actually was!.There was NO hard sell NO Buy Now Button or up sale pages, just an invitation to find out if the opportunity was something that would fit in with my hopes for the future.

It’s a Global Industry worth upwards of 6 billion U.S. Dollars per year and growing, in fact it grew by 20% last year. Not bad eh? especially when most other business’s are shrinking…or “sinking”

It has a PROVEN Step-by-Step System, Follow this in Detail, work hard, and I could not fail. Yes I needed too put in some work! I know….Nothing is for nothing, No Pain No Gain, so I did work.

I had a team of like minded people to help and guide me. In fact they are multiple 6 figure earners…and they LOVE this business, just like I do.

It has a Compensation Plan that has revolutionised this Industry.

Top Tips, How Your Website Can Cut Print Costs.

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

All businesses need marketing. Usually an enterprise will ring fence their budget to include such outlay for brochures, leaflets, business cards, flyers, sales letters, and posters. Some of those are fundamental to marketing needs, such as business cards and brochures, but I have found working as a web designer and developer in Chester that by encouraging businesses to think about marketing in terms of their internet presence they can reduce printing and marketing costs substantially.

Cost effective marketing through your web design

The internet is now a fundamental part of how we function in the 21st century. Entrepreneurs and customers alike are voting to buy and sell on the internet. This doesn’t have to be through e-commerce, i.e. an online shop, you may have a brochure web site which explains your services and products with a direct contact form. A good web presence not only cuts hard-copy printing costs it is also perfect for time efficiency as the internet is so immediate and the target market can be accessed so much faster.

How can I make Cut my printing costs?

You can cut the huge cost of designing leaflets, flyers and brochures, buying reams of paper for sales letters and marketing projects, delivery costs, and researching your target market at a stroke.

A professional web design can replace these cumbersome costs because:

You only need to design a website once. Therefore there is only one cost. When you work with your web designer you can build into the design sections that can add new offers, sales, changes in stock, events or articles in real time.

Through excellent SEO work you can optimise your site so it is being picked up by Google. Instead of putting leaflets and flyers through doors and hoping they will take the bait, Google helps surfers find your prospective customers find you!

By including an article section on your web site you can attract customers who will definitely be interested in your services.

Adding social networking facilities to your web site creates a ready made customer base who will keep returning to your web site. No more trudging the streets. Your prospective clients come to you.

By creating a community on the web you are also making customer relationships better and hence enhancing customer retention.

By having your brochure online it is immediately global. If clients wish to print it off they can.

Making your New Business Start Up a Success the First Time Around

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

This start-up business plan article is a series of business plan articles that I am writing that cover some key take aways that you can start applying to your business planning to get better results with less effort.

One of the key reasons to write your business plan correctly is to get real about what it means for your to start the business you want and what it could take to get your business to the place that it is going to create the results you want.

Because some businesses should die with the plan because of the findings, while others should shift their focus with the findings.

So what is your risk? What is your return? What models of success can you borrow to get to your goals quicker?

What can you do to clearly evaluate your business before you commit resources to achieving a result. Because a result is going to come when you start a business. The question is…will it be the result you want?

Yes, a certain level or risk is necessary to grow a successful business. But the risk is going to have to be calculated if you want to expect predictable results.

So remember a couple of things when you consider if or how you should create your start up business plan:

Your ability to ask the right questions, find successful business growth models that are working now and test your ideas in safe, scalable ways are the key components to growing a successful business without taking unnecessary risks.

I know you hear stories about the entrepreneur that bets the farm, maxes out credit cards and makes it. It happens and those are great stories. But I was the Entrepreneur that maxed everything out and lost. No big deal, I learned from it and am now am stronger and more profitable than ever before. But if I would have calculated my risks a little better I would have reached my present success years sooner.
